Saskilla – Godson 1.5 EP

“Ooh Ahh Saskilla”

The Greenborough legend (word to Tinie Tempah), Saskilla could be considered a pioneer, when we look back at the classic and definitive Grime anthems, Gash By The Hour is definitely in there. Since, he has given us sound upon sound, style upon style, to most recently, where has working heavily behind the scenes to push the culture forward. He’s definitely playing his part in laying the foundation.

And so he returns to the forefront, with Godson 1.5

The 5 track EP, providing an insight into Saskilla’s evolution as an artist. In an effort to further establish the British perspective, he kicks things off with something very British and relevant to the scene, JD Bag. It’s a great mural of past and present as spins through the production, bringing you up to date. A standout track possibly, Nuttin Like Us, featuring Lady Leshurr & Big Narstie, it has the feel of the ol’ days, but it’s a very current track, with all three delivering on their verses. In regards to his work behind the scenes, the next track is evidence of that, as he enlists the features of Maybach Music Group’s Gunplay and the Bawse himself, Rick Ross, for the DJ Cameo exclusive, also featuring Scruffizzer. Solomons Temple, a track that will definitely go off live, before finishing up with Fam, with verses from Canadian Tre Mission and the legend, Wiley.

Saskilla hasn’t missed a beat when it comes to the music, as ever a component of Grime, he’s certainly someone who has his finger on the pulse, as he looks to elevate the sound higher.

“I’m afraid of myself more than anyone else, I’m still lookin’ in the mirror when in need of some help” – Rockie Fresh

One of Rick Ross’ later signings, he (and the likes of Tracy T) may have found themselves in the shadow of the MMG starting line-up, however, for those paying attention, they would come across versatile bodies of work. One thing that has stood out, is his consistency. He has delivered a variety of new age classics, leading up to his most recent project, a clever concept, The Night I Went To, which was a combination of his trilogy of the same name, with the three editions being, Los Angeles, New York, and his hometown Chicago. Complete with quality visuals, he shows no signs of stopping, as he drops this introspective cut.

Pray 4 Me, is a good example of how Rockie can take his inner thoughts and emotion and effortlessly express them with essences of poetry. Production by one of the most talented up and coming producers, Bizness Boi, providing Rockie Fresh with the soulful canvas to lyrically paint pictures. He begins with a very sincere and personal note, “I’m afraid of myself more than anyone else, I’m still lookin’ in the mirror when in need of some help”, something not everyone shares so boldly. Beautiful music, the song has an uplifting tone to it, as he touches on different topics, even something everyone can relate with, “Lookin’ at these n**gaz like why we can’t stay friends, I pray Meek Mill and Drake work again..Amen”, referencing to their previous hit, Amen.

Despite his success thus far, he is still having to try harder, and that’s evident in his music, and is proving to assist him in creating even better music, and visuals to match. Whilst many may be sleeping on him, he most certainly has a core support in his corner championing him, as he progresses on his path for greatness. He is working on the follow up project, the sequel to his popular Electric Highway. As one of the most underrated rappers, I’m intrigued to hear the direction of Rockie Fresh’s sound, as he continues to elevate.

Clipse – I’m Good (Remix) ft. Rick Ross (Official Video)

“The best duo ever”, according to Pusha T, one half of the street favourite The Clipse, return with a lavish video to the remix of their single I’m Good featuring Rick Ross:

This remix is a change in contrast to the original, the beat is the same, the content and video however are darker, more luxurious and obviously with the, “Bawwsss” Rick Ross on the feature, the Maybach lifestyle is expected, a lot of bragging and statements being made, however, although typical of the two, they are two of the best providers of such music and so this collaboration is pulled off with ease.

Birdman – Money To Blow ft. Drake & Lil’ Wayne

It is looking like Birdman’s forthcoming album ‘Always Strapped‘ might just be his best yet, with bangers like Got A Bitch ft. Rick Ross and Written On Her ft. Jay Sean, now leaks Money To Blow ft. Lil’ Wayne & Drake, his albums heavily depend on features, so it comes to no surprise that his new effort will also be.

Birdman – Money To Blow ft. Lil’ Wayne Drake:

This is not anything special, in all honesty I think his collaboration with Rick Ross is far better, however, when you have heavyweights like Lil’ Wayne and man of the moment Drake on a track then something good has to come out of it and it certainly did in this case.

Drake steals the show as he is doing on most of his features, as much as I do not like to join in with anything that becomes over-hyped, I have to give Drake his credit where due, he backs his status up well, on this record, the Cash Money trio brag to the fullest, Lil’ Wayne’s verse is fairly standard which strangely balances with Birdman’s, leaving Drake to take the spotlight with his verse and chorus, the negative of this track is that you do not even realise Birdman has a verse, it kind of gets squashed in between the Young Money boys’ features.

Money To Blow will no doubt help balance the album out which at the same time will make the track standout more, it is not fair to be too critical on this song as it does what it was intended to do, it sounds like a sequel to the chart topping Always Strapped with a new cast member which really makes the difference. Expect more records of similar stature from Cash Money founder Baby aka Birdman.

I think my own expectations have got the better of me, it is a good song but the beat is not as epic as the previous release ‘Always Strapped’, nor the other release ‘Got A B****’, but the video is a good look, nothing too over the top, a good buzz single, with cameos from Jay Sean and Mack Maine, Cash Money are on a steep uprise, Lil’ Wayne went platinum, Jay Sean has now gone platinum, up next is Drake who is expected to go Platinum, Cash Money records are really at their peak, so look out for more big things.

Fabolous – Everything, Everyday, Everywhere ft. Keri Hilson

Produced by Ryan Leslie (Cassie – Me & U), this might just be one of the best productions this year, it is a big statement but when this plays loud, it takes over, the beat is not just unique, it’s emphatic, not too aggresive yet sounds tough at the same time, Ryan Leslie is a master of his craft, the underrated producer provides Fabolous with what might just be another hit, it has certainly helped as his album Loso’s Way is currently #1 on the Billboard charts.

The video (which is also a scene from the album’s accompanying movie Loso’s Way) is a paperazzi’s point of view at Fabolous’ launch party, with Cameos from the likes of Trey Songz, Ace Hood, Rick Ross has a comical appearance, as well as Jadakiss, Ryan Leslie and off course Miss Keri Hilson herself (who is looking good as usual). It is a lavish set as you would expect, but it fits well, the paperazzi eye view makes it fit in whilst standing out from the traditional ‘flossing’ videos that we have become accustomed to definitely latc

Overall, Everything, Everyday, Everywhere (currently being heavily rotated on radio in the states) is a crossover gem that I am sure Ryan, Loso and Keri are proud to have, with Fab putting out numerous ‘street’ videos for the underground audience, the mainstream will definitely latch onto this smash as Fabolous looks to reinstate himself as a Hip-Hop heavyweight.

You have to respect the talented Mr Leslie, a real musician.

4th July, My Birthday!!

As today is my birthday, I thought to share some birthday themed tunes, could only find three though:

Obviously, this song always does the trick at birthday parties, “Go Shawty, It’s Your Birthday..”, next is a more unorthadox choice:

Like I said, unorthadox, however the next and final one is the most obvious, most probably the first song that comes to mind when it comes to ‘birthdays’:

Oh and as a random bonus:

Take care World!

Rick Ross – All I Want ft. The Dream

The Boss returns with his official second single taken from his No.1 charting album ‘Deeper Than Rap’.

All I Want ft. The Dream:

A continuous ‘rap beef’ with heavyweight 50 Cent helped propel Rick Ross further and gain more promotion, it also became a channel for Rick Ross to release ‘street’ singles whilst putting out the softer material for chart success, a good combination as it kept both sets of fans happy.

With ‘All I Want’, Ross enlisted the help of man of the moment ‘The Dream‘ (fresh off the success from his sophomore album ‘Love Vs Money’) and producer Tricky Stewart, the beat possess that feel-good factor, with the combination of drums and a soft but catchy melody on which The Dream provides yet another infectious hook for the fans to sing along to (remember ‘Cookie Jar‘?), The Boss flows over the beat well about his desired lady, with more lavish and luxurious rhymes, but it is all put together neatly, resulting in a potential summer smash for the self-proclaimed Biggest Boss.
